Preston, Christine
Teaching Science, v65 n2 p4-9 Jun 2019
Through Preschool and Foundation Level, children are confident in their knowledge about rocks. Five- to six-year-olds have firm ideas on what they consider rocks are and where they might be found (Preston, 2018). With the exception of children who are avid rock collectors, such knowledge usually comprises general, inconsistent ideas formed from everyday experiences. Young children's knowledge, general and scientific vocabulary and inquiry skills can be expanded through guided inquiry and strategic discussion about rocks. In this article, a range of ideas for exploring rocks are outlined with links to the Australian Curriculum: Science (ACARA, 2018a) Science Inquiry Skills and Science as a Human Endeavour content strands. Reference to research emphasises how learning experiences like these contribute to young children's development and foundational understanding of science phenomena. High levels of student engagement are fostered through child-relatable explorations with rocks, where they find answers to personal questions.
