This paper provides a brief introduction to teaching strategies that can be used to support English as Additional Language (EAL) students in learning biology terminology. The paper begins with an overview of EAL students and considers the difficulties that they may face in the classroom along with the challenges that mainstream teachers may have when teaching EAL students. Then, an outline of strategies identified in the literature as promoting effective learning of biology terminology is discussed and critiqued. Next, some feedback and suggestions about how to support EAL students learning biology terminology is offered by an experienced teacher of both biology and EAL students. This paper focuses on these strategies (and others found in the literature) and discusses how they can be implemented, why they are effective, and how these strategies can be modified and enhanced.
