Secrets of the STEM X Academy

Science teachers, whether in primary or secondary schools, are in the front line for creating a more scientifically literate community. This article describes the STEM X Academy, a program created with the following goals: (1) demystify Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM); (2) help teachers transform their teaching with workshops that model pedagogical skills, and with rich content to support teaching the Australian Science Curriculum; and (3) rekindle flagging enthusiasm for the discipline. The inaugural STEM X Academy that was run in January 2016 was a huge success. Topics covered during the intense week of activities were as diverse as photosynthesis research, droplet lenses for smartphone microscopes, space surveillance, and climate change. Educational matters discussed included the success of flipped classrooms, how to use Australian Science Teacher's Association's (ASTA's) Science ASSIST website, and learning how to develop practical resources to support classroom teachers based on the latest research articles. The STEM X Academy also provided an opportunity for science teachers to form connections and professional relationships with other science teachers from Australia.
