We're All in This Together: Identifying Meaningful Outcomes for K-6 Students of Teacher Candidates
Fisher, Mary; Ociepka, Anne
Teacher Education and Special Education, v34 n2 p152-175 May 2011
Connecting K-6 student outcomes with teacher preparation programs remains a critical need for the field. Even while educators have begun to sort through and document outcomes for teacher interns relative to national standards, the task of connecting performance to K-6 student outcomes has been little documented. In this interview study, the authors identify what mentor teachers associated with one urban teacher preparation program believe are positive student and associated mentor outcomes that result from student teacher participation in their elementary classrooms. The authors conduct a content analysis of individual interviews with 16 student teacher mentors, and use data from a teacher candidate focus group that addressed a subset of the teacher interview questions to triangulate this analysis. The authors discuss their findings in light of implications of the findings for teacher educators and how findings can be used for in-depth, follow-up studies. (Contains 4 tables and 1 figure.)
