Science Education and Health Education: Locating the Connections
Harrison, Jennifer K.
Studies in Science Education, v41 n1 p51-90 2005
The starting point for this article is the lack of a clear or emerging consensus of what is generally understood by the term "health education", or its role as a component of the school science curriculum which requires a particular research focus. One of the purposes of this article is to explore the concept of health education as one in which a number of associated ideas and concepts, to do with aspects of health literacy and health promotion, together with notions of healthy schools and standards, appear to have become fused and confused. A second purpose is to open dialogue about what the particular contribution of science education to health education might be, and how that contribution might be more fully evaluated, and more widely reported in the literature on science education research. The author explores some current concerns about the nature and purposes of the science curriculum in school. A framework of questions for curriculum planning is introduced that may be used to ascertain the extent to which planning caters for the wider goals of science education, drawing in goals of health education. This framework also provides a link to a concept central to this article: the "Health Promoting School". Meanings behind the term "health education" are discussed to illustrate the importance of a "personal-development" model of health education for science educators. A range of health education studies and evaluation strategies are described, focusing on three key topics: (1) nutrition; (2) reproduction and sexuality; and (3) drug education. The Discussion section addresses associated pedagogical issues and the use of expert-driven intervention studies to suggest directions for further health-related research within science education.
