The Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) follows education budgets and legislation during regular and special legislative sessions. The Legislative Reports follow education and budget issues from governors' proposals through final legislative actions in each of the 16 SREB states. The reports include bill numbers and legislative Web site addresses, a feature that allows state legislators and staff to access current legislation quickly. This report presents final actions in Alabama, South Carolina and Tennessee. It also summarizes: (1) a special session of the Florida legislature to address the state property tax system and the governor's proposed budget cuts, including that of the state's educational institutions; (2) budget reductions in Maryland, including the state Department of Education budget; and (3) the Texas governor's approving line-item budget vetoes in which the vetoed appropriations include expenditures earmarked for projects and operations at institutions of higher education.
