Mobile Learning Devices. Essentials for Principals
Rogers, Kipp D.
Solution Tree
In "Mobile Learning Devices," the author helps educators confront and overcome their fears and doubts about using mobile learning devices (MLDs) such as cell phones, personal digital assistants, MP3 players, handheld games, digital audio players, and laptops in classrooms. School policies that ban such tools are outdated, the author suggests; today's students are accustomed to having instant access to information and receiving immediate feedback. When used within appropriate guidelines, and with attention to instructional goals, MLDs are powerful, cost-effective learning tools that increase student engagement dramatically, allowing students to learn anytime, anywhere. "Mobile Learning Devices" explains what mobile learning is, how to mitigate the potentially negative effects of MLDs through acceptable-use policies, and how to use MLDs to enhance and expand learning of core content, 21st century skills, and the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS). The author describes how to incorporate technology into classrooms and provides specific steps, logistical guidelines, and nine complete sample lessons. The book also explores the implications and potential of MLDs for future instruction and educational reform. Benefits include: (1) Understand how mobile learning and technology can be safely and effectively used in schools; (2) Leverage mobile learning and technology in schools; (3) Increase student motivation and achievement with research-based instructional strategies; and (4) Incorporate the use of MLDs with complete reproducible lessons plans.
