Merry, Joseph J. – Sociology of Education, 2013
Why does the United States lag behind so many other countries on international education assessments? The traditional view targets school-based explanations--U.S. schools attract poorer teachers and lack the proper incentives. But the U.S. educational system may also serve children with comparatively greater academic challenges as a result of…

Williams, Trevor – Sociology of Education, 1975
This research conducted in secondary Canadian schools, examines the relationship between the educational ambitions of students and the expectations held by teachers for students. Four hundred and twenty-six randomly selected Ontario secondary school teachers rated 75 subject teaching positions on a prestige status scale. Clifton, Rodney A. – Sociology of Education, 1981
Examines the effect of teacher expectations on differences in achievement between German-speaking and French-speaking ninth graders in English-speaking classrooms. Davies, Scott – Sociology of Education, 2002
Argues that progressive education is better understood as highlighting the dual nature of policy frames. Shows how three Canadian educational commissions invoked similar progressive ideals, but used these ideals to justify different reforms. Interprets progressivism as loose but resonant language that is reused over time to express changing…
