Tech Talk for Social Studies Teachers: Teaching Students about the Voting Process
Fernan, Courtney; Green, Tim
Social Studies, v95 n5 p220 Sep 2004
Voter apathy is at an all-time high in the United States. Important decisions and policies are being determined through disappointing turnouts at the voting polls. In a democratic society, this is unconscionable! Voter turnout needs to improve, but what part can teachers play, besides voting, in helping to change voter apathy? Today's students will eventually be the next round of voters. Teachers have an opportunity to guide their students in becoming not only politically aware but also responsible adults who value and honor their right to vote in a democratic country. As proud citizens of our country, we hope that our students long for the day when they themselves can step into a polling place and indicate their choices. This article contains web resources, in which teachers, parents, and students can learn about the voting process. The sites help guide and inform students about elections and their rights as United States citizens. The sites will be useful for teachers as they help shape their students into responsible citizens.
