History education lends itself to considering historical problems from the perspective of people of that time and exploring their thinking or "predictions" about the problems' possible effects. Building lessons around the use of prediction-making humanizes history because it allows students to investigate historical events and understand historical people in the following ways: (1) taking a personal approach; (2) challenging the accepted; (3) breathing life into history; and (4) solving the problems of the past. In this article, the authors discuss how historical prediction-making highlights certain features of history, offer an instructional model that enables students to make reasoned predictions about the outcome of historical events, and present an example drawn from primary sources related to the ratification debates over the U.S. Constitution.
