Wollman, Warren; Karplus, Robert – School Science and Mathematics, 1974
A total of 450 seventh and eighth graders responded to six tasks requiring proportional reasoning and representing different degrees of concreteness. Results showed that more students answered questions correctly when concrete aspects existed, and that about one-fourth of the group was unpredictable in applying proportional reasoning at the formal…

Smart, James R. – School Science and Mathematics, 1974
A short story is presented which uses as its characters rational and irrational numbers and numbers involving fractional exponents. (DT)

LaBar, Martin; And Others – School Science and Mathematics, 1974
The authors provide a list of calculators which have a capacity for handling programs, and a list of programs for such calculators which are available at cost. They argue that the use of these materials at many levels of mathematics instruction enhances both motivation and understanding. (SD)

Campbell, James Reed – School Science and Mathematics, 1974
Behaviors of one low and one high ability group were analyzed in three classroom situations. The teacher's effect on discipline of the former was pronounced, and observers felt this group learned only in the science classroom; the high ability group experienced less variation. Results on other variables are reported. (SD)

Brumbaugh, Douglas K.; Hynes, Michael C. – School Science and Mathematics, 1974
Students calculated the potential speed of a 10-speed bicycle when operated in different gears from measured tire circumference and observed number of revolutions per minute. They then tested the bicycle's speed and compared achieved and theoretical speeds. Hypotheses to explain differences are solicited. (SD)

O'Neill, John D.; Dalida, John W. – School Science and Mathematics, 1974
Providing for original and creative thinking by geometry students is discussed. Techniques for discovering theorems are suggested, and examples of places in geometry where these methods can be used are given. (DT)
