Early Exposure to & Preparation for College: A Guide for Educators
Laing, Tony; Villavicencio, Adriana
Research Alliance for New York City Schools
Black and Latino young men may face a number of barriers on their pathway to college, including a belief that college is not for them, difficulty navigating the college search and application process, financial obstacles, and insufficient academic preparation. Expanded Success Initiative (ESI) schools are working to prepare students for college early in high school, in hopes of helping them identify postsecondary goals and take concrete steps toward achieving these goals. This guide covers approaches that principals and teachers across ESI high schools have identified as important to help young men of color reach--and be well prepared--for college. Specific strategies detailed in the guide include: (1) Helping students envision themselves in college; (2) Supporting the college search and application processes; (3) Providing access to college coursework and career training; and (4) Increasing opportunities and supports in math.
