Reading Improvement, v50 n1 p1-11 Spr 2013
This study sought to determine if, by providing parents with a workshop on the use of dialogic reading techniques during the storybook reading event in the home, Pre-Kindergarten children's attitude and interest in reading would improve. Parents completed a survey prior to the workshop and two months following completion of the workshop. Through the analysis of the comments provided on the survey, parents indicated an improvement in attitude toward reading and interest in storybook reading within the home when dialogic reading techniques were implemented. Additional findings of the study included an increase in parent confidence in reading with their child as well as an increased occurrence of emergent literacy skills during the storybook reading event. This research study provides the details of a parent workshop which led to an increase in student's attitude and interest in reading. The parent workshop can be implemented by educators as an effective intervention technique for increasing student attitude and interest in reading.
