The Effect of a One to One Laptop Initiative on High School Math Achievement in a Suburban High School Environment
Heap, Bryan
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of St. Francis
Technology continues to advance the pace of American education. Each year school districts across the country invest resources into computers, software, technology specialists, and staff development. The stated goal given to stakeholders is usually to increase student achievement, increase motivation, or to better prepare students for the future. Currently as the trend continues, schools are purchasing and disseminating laptops and other personal computing devices directly into the hands of each student enrolled in school. Students involved in a one to one (1:1) or personal computing platform, continue to grow each year. This quasi-experimental quantitative study explored the impact of a one to one platform in a large, suburban school district and the effects on math achievement. Students were randomly assigned to Math I classes for the duration of one school year. All students were given mobile computing devices, while all staff involved in the study had staff development and training in regard to the usage of the devices. Student growth was measured based on EXPLORE scores administered in the spring. Also, Math I final exams and unit exam scores were assessed and compared to previous years scores for similar classes. In addition to studying trends in student scores, staff members completed surveys to determine the effect using a mobile computing device had on student learning, teaching, and motivation.
