Should Form Follow Function? Changing Academic Structures in UK Universities
Hogan, John
Perspectives London policy and practice in higher education, v9 n2 p49-56 Apr 2005
What, if any, changes have occurred in the academic structures of UK universities since the early 1990s and the abolition of the binary line? This paper attempts to answer this question and raises issues about the significance of any such changes. There is one useful publication that can provide some insight into the pattern of academic organisation within UK universities over a period of time and this is the "Commonwealth Universities Yearbook." The results in this document are based on the submission of 81 UK universities that were members of ACU and made a return for the 1994 and 2003-04 Yearbooks. Of these, 58 were pre-1992 universities and 23 post- 1992 universities. Of the 81, 60 (74 percent) appear to have undertaken at least one significant academic reorganisation during the nine-year period. Only two of the post-1992 universities included in the Yearbooks did not undergo a significant academic reorganisation. Some universities clearly went through more than one reorganisation. Reasons universities restructure are discussed in this document.
