Quality Assurance 1992-2012
Brown, Roger
Perspectives: Policy and Practice in Higher Education, v16 n4 p113-117 2012
As the author's contribution to a series marking the Golden Jubilee of the Association of University Administrators, he reflects on changes in quality assurance over the past twenty years and speculates on what the future may hold for quality as the association moves into a new and very different competitive regime. He begins by discussing the quality assurance regimes in the different sectors of higher education before 1992. Then, he links institutional funding to teaching quality, followed by a discussion of the increased importance of information about quality. His final reflection is on whether all the effort that has gone into quality assurance since 1992 has resulted in improved quality. He contends that the more systematic approach to protecting quality that one now has across the sector, based as it still is on the work of the former Higher Education Quality Council (HEQC), has benefited students and other stakeholders immensely.
