Emotional Coaching: A Lesson in Intensity
Fonseca, Christine
Parenting for High Potential, p24-27 Mar 2011
Raising gifted children is a challenge, a big challenge. Often a dichotomy of emotions, gifted children can shift from happy and engaging, to angry and explosive, to sullen and withdrawn--all in a matter of minutes. Their behavioral extremes can often cause frustration and confusion in the strongest of parents. But why are these seemingly adept kids such a challenge to raise? Gifted children view the world through a unique lens characterized by an inborn awareness of life. This intensity, or overexcitability as defined by Kazimierez Dabrowski, refers to how a gifted individual approaches life. At its best, this intensity is the driving passion that enables some people to achieve amazing things. But at its worst, it is the turmoil that has the power to consume these same individuals from time to time as they learn how to manage that aspect of their personality. Intensity typically affects one or more of five major areas--intellectual, psycho-motor, sensual, imagination, and emotional development. Parents can become their child's emotional coach and not only help gifted kids learn that the emotional aspects of their personality are normal and part of what it means to be gifted, but also teach specific strategies to help gifted children cope with these sometimes explosive feelings. In this article, the author presents five coping strategies to help gifted kids.
