Sharing Responsibility for Student Learning
Borden, Victor M. H.; Pike, Gary R.
New Directions for Institutional Research, nS1 p83-89 Fall 2008
The past 25 years have witnessed an ebb and flow of the accountability movement in the United States as national interest in and concern about the quality and effectiveness of higher education have moved in and out of the forefront of public consciousness. Today Democrats and Republicans alike are critical of higher education and calling for greater accountability. More important, college presidents and the higher education community in general appear to be willing to respond positively to calls for accountability. The key question is not whether higher education will be more accountable but what form this accountability will take. From the authors' perspective, an important question is, what can institutional researchers do to ensure that accountability initiatives meet the legitimate public need to know, while simultaneously providing a vehicle for improving American higher education? This chapter examines some of the factors that may influence whether colleges and universities are able to respond effectively to the renewed interest in accountability and suggests that institutional researchers have an important role to play in moving ahead constructively.
