Developing Enterprise GIS for University Administration: Organizational and Strategic Considerations
McCormick, B. Grant
New Directions for Institutional Research, n120 p63-76 2003
This chapter is based on the author's experience working with geographic information systems (GIS) at the University of Arizona, along with insights gained through literature reviews and dialogue with staff at other universities. It is intended to convey some key organizational issues that are likely to bear on most campus administrative GIS efforts. The first section presents several unique aspects of the campus context that appear relevant to GIS initiatives, while the second section is a summary of organizational dynamics affecting GIS implementation. The third section reviews basic forms of campus GIS, and the final section presents key strategic issues for enterprise GIS.
