Ukraine had been under Soviet domination for 75 years. Its institutions, including its educational system, were guided by rules established in Moscow. When the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, the country had opportunities to reinvent itself. In this article, the author discusses the Ukrainian Montessori Project, a successful partnership between the Princeton Center Teacher Education (PCTE) and the Main Education Board of Kyiv. Today there are Montessori schools throughout 15 regions (states) of Ukraine. Beginning with the first Montessori school and Ukrainian Montessori teacher education center in Kyiv, Montessori principles have begun to influence the entire Ukrainian education system. This description of Ukraine Montessori can serve as a model for future international efforts to develop indigenous Montessori schools and training centers around the world.
