Nancy McCormick Rambusch: A Reflection
Povell, Phyllis
Montessori Life: A Publication of the American Montessori Society, v17 n4 p28-29 Fall 2005
Fall of 2005 marks the 12th anniversary of Nancy McCormick Rambusch's death. As the founder of the American Montessori Society and as its first president, Rambusch reintroduced Maria Montessori to America at a time--1960--when education for the young was floundering, and a second look at the Montessori method, which had changed the early childhood landscape for the better in the early 20th century, was sorely needed. Rambusch was unique among educators. One of her other great accomplishments was from 1958 to 1963 when she assisted in the establishment of over 400 Montessori schools in the United States and continued working with teacher training programs for the American Montessori Society before moving on to many other innovative projects. In this article, the author discusses some of her influences in education.
