In this article, the author states that school librarians can contribute to an atmosphere that supports intellectual freedom by drawing attention to the subtle messages about community values--messages that are communicated by virtue of what is included or excluded from curricular and co-curricular offerings. The author address issues with internet filtering in schools; use of honor codes that are central to a school's identity; censorship; and intellectual property and fair use. Intellectual freedom is not a value held in a vacuum but, instead, in a particular time and place. Reflecting on instructional programs through the lens of intellectual freedom has reinforced some key tenets, as addressed in this article.
