Leaders and citizens of the next generation will have to do more with less. There will be fewer natural resources (e.g., less timber and less biodiversity), and the world's population will be greater. As a result, education must equip the students of today with the skills they need to cope with change, uncertainty, and complexity. This type of education is far different than that which the previous generations received. They were taught how to be successful in the world that surrounded them as students. Now, however, the pace of change is accelerating, so such an education would not serve the next generation well. In the present, educators can help primary and secondary students ask questions, think critically, and make decisions, while empowering them to create and implement solutions to local sustainability issues.
