Case in Point: Illuminations for the Future of Special Education Leadership
Thompson, Anne Louise
Journal of Special Education Leadership, v24 n2 p111-113 Sep 2011
At the 2011 Office of Special Education Leadership Mega Conference in Crystal City, VA, demographer Jim Johnson, of the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise and the University of North Carolina, discussed the changing demographics of the US, coining one of his six observations on the changes ahead as the "silver tsunami (Johnson, 2011)." Special education leaders are graying and the exodus has begun with the first of the baby boomers (1946-1963) having turned 65 this year. The juxtaposition of the five articles in this volume will challenge current and prospective leaders, as well as preservice and in-service educators, to pause and reflect on revealed insights into leadership for the future. Each of the articles provides a research base for a current issue confronting leadership in special education. Considerations are provided for confronting the studies' findings and thus providing the reader with a glimpse into the future of leadership in special education.
