Americans with Disabilities Act Scavenger Hunt
Ramsey, Ursula
Journal of Legal Studies Education, v35 n1 p143-164 Win 2018
This article describes a scavenger hunt for Business Law students. Specifically, students compete in this scavenger hunt to identify accessible design features on campus to undergird their study of Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Title III of the ADA prohibits public accommodations from discriminating on the basis of disability and requires that the design, construction, and alteration of public accommodations comply with the ADA's accessibility standards. The scavenger hunt is part of a lesson that targets four learning objectives: (1) students will demonstrate their knowledge of Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act by participating in a scavenger hunt; (2) students will incorporate technology as a pedagogical tool via use of camera phones; (3) students will develop empathy for individuals covered by the ADA; and (4) students will deepen effective teamwork skills. Part II of this article discusses educational games, including scavenger hunts, as pedagogical tools. Part III explains the learning objectives of this lesson and how those objectives incorporate and are tailored to aspects of the millennial learning profile, and Part IV provides the lesson plan, including teaching tips.
