You've Got a Deal! Using the Film "Draft Day" to Teach Fundamental Contract Law and Analytical Skills
Ruud, Judith Kish; Ruud, William N.; Moussavi, Farzad
Journal of Legal Studies Education, v34 n1 p41-61 Win 2017
This article proposes a film assignment that uses a series of activities built around the film "Draft Day" to supplement traditional pedagogies for teaching contract law in introductory courses. This film facilitates learning by reinforcing the contract formation principles faculty teach in introductory courses; showing contract formation as something real, not merely as rules to be memorized; and providing the context necessary to understand contract law and its impact on business. Part II of this article reviews some key benefits of using film as a supplemental pedagogy in undergraduate business courses. Then Parts III and IV discuss recommendations for using film to help students taking introductory courses learn contract law and develop critical thinking skills. They show how the assignment incorporates these recommendations and describes how it effectively engages students. Finally, Part V describes how faculty may use this assignment in introductory courses.
