Becoming Amphibious Jews
Schein, Jeffrey
Journal of Jewish Education, v73 n2 p133-135 May 2007
This article presents the author's response to Joseph Reimer's essay titled, "Beyond More Jews Doing Jewish: Clarifying the Goals of Informal Jewish Education." The author focuses his response on Reimer's notions of challenging advocates of informal Jewish education to "go deeper" into the learning processes they envision. The author's comments culminate with two vignettes drawn from his experiences as the senior consultant to the Lekhu Lakhem seminar for day camp directors of the (Jewish Community Centers) JCC's of North America. First, the author shares some touchstones of his own understanding of the relationship between "formal" and "informal" Jewish education. He tries to do so through the fine Jewish tradition of attribution b'shem omro, crediting the source of the insight.
