Math/FCS Class Boosts Test Scores
Sanden, Jan
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v96 n1 p18-19 2004
Integrating mathematics with family and consumer sciences (FCS) has enabled youth to pass the Minnesota 8th Grade Math Basic Skills test. The test focuses on the eight content areas: (1) problem solving with whole numbers and fractions; (2) problem solving with percentage/ratio; (3) number sense; (4) estimation; 5) measurement; (6) tables and graphs; (7) chance and data; and (8) shape and space. The math/FCS class centered on food. A variety of hands-on activities in the kitchen were used to teach the math content. Students with poor math skills often lack the ability to make common sense estimates, so students were taught how to estimate the size of kitchen equipment and how to check out their answers while learning to use common measuring tools. They took pretests and posttests to help determine the validity of the math/FCS endeavor. The results were statistically insignificant due to the small sample. The math/FCS students increased their scores an average of 3.9 points and the traditional math class increased by 3.6 points.
