Investigates familial alcoholism effects and the comparative probability of risk that adult children of alcoholics have for alcohol dependence. Examines drug and alcohol abuse, alone and in combination, among older people (N=100) using case records, interviews, and a questionnaire. Compared attitudes toward alcoholism in 120 urban secondary school teachers and 105 rural secondary school teachers in Benin District, Nigeria. Results indicated that urban teachers, males, younger teachers, those with higher degrees, and unmarried teachers had less negative attitudes toward alcoholism. (JAC)

Interviewed 20 female and 44 male bartenders. Findings indicated that both male and female bartenders are reliable reporters of their own and their customers' drinking behaviors and are aware of causes of problem drinking. Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) offenders (N=151) identified as alcoholics were coerced to seek treatment for their alcoholism. A follow-up study six months later revealed that these coerced alcoholics did no better or no worse than other alcoholics entering treatment without coercion. (Author/RC)
