As University housing offices seek to maximize use of their available beds, it is valuable to understand the factors that are most important in influencing students to choose to move off campus. This study compares importance ratings on a wide range of housing factors for students who planned to stay on campus and those who planned to move off campus. Students staying on campus were more likely to value the support of in-residence staff and the ease of making friends with other students. Those moving off campus were more likely to place importance on the cost of housing, ability to have a single room or private bathroom, availability of parking, ability to live in housing over break, and ability to cook one's own meals. These findings can assist institutions in determining which changes are likely to positively affect on-campus retention.
