Lateral Transfer Students: The Role of Housing in Social Integration and Transition
Utter, Mary; DeAngelo, Linda
Journal of College and University Student Housing, v42 n1 p178-193 2015
Social integration for lateral transfer students (four-to-four-year) is promoted by a living environment that encourages learning about campus, connecting to resources, and developing peer groups. Interviews with 27 lateral transfer students revealed that those who had previously lived on campus had expectations that residence halls would provide an environment for social networking. The absence of this supportive living environment makes successful integration and social connection challenging for these students. This qualitative phenomenological study explores how living arrangement influences a lateral transfer student's transitional experience and social integration.
