Wilson, Philip G.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1984
The study evaluated a program for teaching family-style mealtime skills to four profoundly retarded institutionalized adolescents. The program used forward chaining with a less-to-more intrusive prompting sequence and contingent reinforcement to teach the skills. (Author/DB)

Van Houten, Ronald – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1979
The article suggests and describes several ways in which social validation procedures can be employed by researchers and educators to help them select when and how much to modify target behaviors of students. (DLS)

Peer reviewed
Foster, Sharon L.; Ritchey, Wendy L. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1979
To date, the assessment methodology in the area has moved in two directions: sociometric measures (peer nomination and peer rating scales), which have provided the major means of identifying the socially competent child; and direct observation, principally employed in the specification of socially competent behaviors. (Author/DLS)

Kohler, Frank W.; Greenwood, Charles R. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1990
A classwide peer tutoring procedure was implemented in an urban elementary school classroom of 23 students, to improve students' spelling performance. Results indicated the untrained or collateral tutoring behaviors increased the academic response frequencies of three tutees and the weekly spelling achievement of one target tutee. (Author/DB)

Peer reviewed
White, Alicia G.; Bailey, Jon S. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1990
The study reduced the disruptive behaviors of students in 2 elementary physical education classes, including an alternative education class containing 14 fourth and fifth grade boys with severe behavior problems. A modified time-out procedure was used to reduce frequency of disruptive behaviors by 95 percent. (Author/DB)

Osborne, Kurt; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1990
The study investigated the effectiveness of using visual cues to highlight the seams of baseballs, to improve the hitting of curveballs by five undergraduate varsity baseball team candidates. Results indicated that subjects hit a greater percentage of marked than unmarked balls. (Author/DB)

Peer reviewed
Love, Steven R.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1990
Two autistic children were treated for specific fears. Children were exposed gradually to fearful situations, with mothers serving as therapists and reinforcers. Five-month and one-year follow-up assessments with one child showed maintenance of treatment effects. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Autism, Behavior Change, Fear, Maintenance
Peer reviewed
Foxx, R. M.; Faw, Gerald D. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1990
A long-term followup (from 26 to 57 months) of echolalia and correct question-answering was conducted with six mentally retarded adult subjects identified from three previously published studies. Echolalia was lower than in baseline in 80.6 percent of the followups. Issues related to the study of maintenance are discussed. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Adults, Behavior Change, Echolalia, Followup Studies

Iwata, Brian A.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1990
Three studies investigated environmental correlates of self-injurious behavior in seven developmentally disabled children and adolescents which were then later used for treatment. Correlates investigated included positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, automatic reinforcement, and control. "Escape extinction" was successfully…

Repp, Alan C.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1990
The study compared the task demonstration model and the standard prompting hierarchy in training 8 persons (ages 16-21) with moderate or severe mental retardation on a discrimination task. The task demonstration model was found to be superior during both training and generalization phases. (DB)

Linscheid, Thomas R.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1990
The Self-Injurious Behavior Inhibiting System (in which mild and brief contingent electric stimulation is delivered) was evaluated with five cases involving severe mental retardation and previously unmanageable self-injurious behavior. Findings indicated almost complete elimination of the self-injurious behavior with followup suggesting continuing…

Iwata, Brian A.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1990
A measure, the Self-Injury Trauma Scale, is described for classifying and quantifying surface tissue damage. The scale permits differentiation of self-injurious behavior according to topography, location of the injury on the body, type of injury, number of injuries, and estimate of severity. High interrater reliability has been found. (Author/DB)

Koegel, Robert L.; Koegel, Lynn Kern – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1990
The study assessed whether 4 students (ages 9-13) with severe autistic disabilities could learn to use a self-management treatment package to reduce stereotypic behavior.
