Cultural Identification and Academic Achievement among African American Males
Irving, Miles Anthony; Hudley, Cynthia
Journal of Advanced Academics, v19 n4 p676-698 Sum 2008
This study investigated the relationship between intercultural perceptions, identity, and academic achievement among African American males. Specifically, this study investigated the relationship of academic achievement, cultural mistrust, oppositional cultural attitudes, ethnic identity development and educational outcome expectations and value, and socioeconomic status among African American male high school students (N = 115). We hypothesized that a negative perception of the dominant culture and oppositional cultural attitudes would negatively affect academic achievement, academic outcome expectations, and academic achievement values. We found that negative perceptions of the dominant culture and oppositional cultural attitudes were negatively related to academic achievement, academic outcome expectations, and academic achievement values.
