"Pedagogy of the Oppressed" Fifty Years On: A Review Essay
Abbott, Diana; Badley, Ken
International Journal of Christianity & Education, v24 n1 p108-115 Mar 2020
For some readers of this journal, the name Freire has always been part of the educational conversation. Other readers will possibly remember the stir sparked by the publication of Pedagogy of the Oppressed in English in 1970 (translated by Myra Ramos from the original 1968 Portuguese edition). This radical Brazilian educator's conception of literacy, understanding of authority, advocacy of question-driven pedagogy, and sympathies for liberation theology ultimately led to repeated offers of employment in some circles and unhappy periods of employment in others. This article presents brief reviews on the following: (1) Paulo Freire, "Pedagogy of the Oppressed: 50th Anniversary Edition," London: Bloomsbury, 2018, $25.95 pbk, ISBN 9781501314131, 224 pp.; (2) Antonia Darder, "The Student Guide to Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed," London: Bloomsbury, March 2018, $19.95 pbk, ISBN 9781474255622, 208 pp.; (3) James D Kirylo and Drick Boyd, "Paulo Freire: His Faith, Spirituality, and Theology, Rotterdam: Sense," 2019, $43.00 pbk, ISBN 9789463510547, 134 pp.; and (4) Irwin Leopando, "A Pedagogy of Faith: The Theological Vision of Paulo Freire," London: Bloomsbury, 2017, $39.95 pbk, ISBN 9781472579805, 245 pp.
