The author of this article, James W. Fraser, is Professor of History and Education at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, New York University. He begins this article with an expression of his gratitude to Robert Hampel and the editors of "The History of Education Quarterly" for commissioning the four essays that start the conversation presented in the article. The authors of these four essays were asked to think about "What I'd love to research but never will because life is short" or "Here's what I'd explore if TIME were endless." Having read all four of these essays, by Barbara Finkelstein, James Albisetti, John Thelin, and Wayne Urban, Fraser envisions the emerging theme of these articles to be on the edge of dramatically expanding what the field of education history encompasses. In the essays, new crosscutting themes emerge that Fraser believes will lead to major new veins of research. Fraser also considers his own response to the question: "So if I too could live forever, or closer to it, what would I work on in some more distant future?" He concludes that he would want to bring back some long departed historians and get them to do some new research and comment on some new issues.
