Using Sense of Place in the Classroom
Butzow, Dean
Geography Teacher, v16 n1 p10-14 2019
The author assigned their students to keep a weekly cloud journal. Each week, for seven weeks, students were required to take a picture of a cloud, identify the location and name, and give the scientific definition of the cloud. The author added a Sense of Place Inventory to each weekly entry. Using the GeoCamp Iceland Field Guide as an example, the author included the following prompt: "Please provide a brief factual description of the landscape you are currently experiencing with any or all senses. What is there? Where is it? How is it arranged? How did it make you feel? Why is it important to you?" Each student had a unique perspective of his or her sense of place. They not only seemed to enjoy the assignment but started using it as an opportunity to take time out to reflect on what they learned in the classroom, their observations of their environment, and their relationship to that environment to produce a deeper connection to themselves and the people around them. The feelings elicited during the assignment allowed them to develop their own sense of place and then use that experience of connecting to the environment to more consciously connect to themselves and the greater world around them.
