"What a Wonderful World": Effective Instructional Strategies to Promote Engaged Learning with Maps in K-12 Classrooms

It is important that preservice educators have an awareness of geography, including city, county, state, and the broader globe. Ensuring that preservice educators are aware of new technologies to promote K-12 students' knowledge of geography is important. K-12 students can benefit by gaining 21st-century skills using problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and teamwork. The primary focus of the research presented in this article was to expose preservice educators to floor robots to increase the likelihood that they will be comfortable using new technologies in K-12 social studies classrooms to support student learning. Student-participants received one of eight task cards designed by the first and second authors to engage students in a problem-solving task. The purpose of the activity was to increase the likelihood that these preservice teachers will use floor robots or newer technologies in their future classrooms to enhance K-12 student learning. Results of this study support the idea that floor robots may be an effective method for helping students learn about and reflect on world events as well as to increase geographic knowledge.
