Digital Disturbances, Disorders, and Pathologies: A Discussion of Some Unintended Consequences of Technology in Higher Education
Haughton, Noela A.; Yeh, Kuo-Chuan; Nworie, John; Romero, Liz
Educational Technology, v53 n4 p3-16 Jul-Aug 2013
As with any innovation, the adoption and diffusion of digital technologies in higher education have also brought unintended consequences. This article discusses the unintended misuse of these technologies in the higher education setting. Depending upon severity, these consequences discussed--distraction, addiction, academic dishonesty, and cyberbullying--are framed as disturbance, disorder, and pathology. The behaviors associated with each misuse undermine the instructional mission of higher education institutions. The goals of this article are to raise awareness of the unintended consequences of digital technologies; offer strategies to support positive adoption and diffusion of these and related emergent technologies; and, where possible, make recommendations for managing these disturbances, disorders, and pathologies in the higher education setting.
