ECAR Study of Undergraduate Students and Information Technology, 2017

EDUCAUSE
For the fourteenth year, the EDUCAUSE Center for Analysis and Research (ECAR) has conducted research on information technology and higher education's most important end users, undergraduate students. For the 2017 report, 43,559 students from 124 institutions in 10 countries and 40 U.S. states participated in the research. The quantitative findings in this report were developed using the 35,760 survey responses from 110 U.S. institutions. Data in this study and analysis relate to the following topics: (1) Device ownership; (2) Campus technology experience; (3) Sources of technology support; (4) Classroom technology experiences; (5) Desired technologies for teaching and learning; (6) Student success technology evaluations; and (7) Perspectives and preferences for teaching and learning environments; and (8) Classroom mobile experiences and policies. Among the key findings are: (1) Students rated their overall campus technology experiences favorably; (2) When it comes to meeting technological support needs, students' default modality is DIY; (3) Students are remarkably savvy about keeping their technology secure; (4) Laptops are king, smartphones are queen, and tablets are on the way out; (5) Students' experiences with their instructors' use of and approach to technology in the classroom are a mixed bag; (6) Students are overwhelmingly pleased with the student success tools available to them; (7) Students are choosing sides in the online versus face-to-face debate; (8) Students are satisfied with features of their learning management system (LMS)...except when they are not; (9) Students would like their instructors to use more technology in their classes; and (10) Students reported that faculty are banning or discouraging the use of laptops, tablets, and (especially) smartphones more often than in previous years.
