Crossing Cultural Borders and Expectations of Schooling: Learning from Immigrant Families
Adu-Gyamfi, Mary; Castro, Antonio J.
Curriculum and Teaching Dialogue, v24 n1-2 p19-34 2022
This essay explores the cultural expectations and border crossing experiences of two African immigrant families. We trace the cultural assumptions related to child-rearing and schooling that the parents brought with them from their home countries. In uncovering parents' conceptions of the U.S. system of schooling, we hope to highlight implications for how teachers and schools attend to the needs of immigrant parents and how teachers and schools can enact their own border crossing.
