Work sampling is a technique that has been employed in industry and fields such as healthcare for some time. It is a powerful technique, and an alternative to conventional stop watch time studies, used by industrial engineers to focus upon random work sampling observations. This study applies work sampling to the duties performed by an individual faculty member, self-monitored during the regular academic year within an engineering school at a primarily liberal arts university in north Texas. This methodology could be applied by faculty throughout academia where it could be used as a tool by administration to better understand the work load content and tasks which occupy their time. It also may be used by individual faculty members to realign their own work tasks based upon the data obtained.
