McCabe, Butterfield, & Treviño (2012) recently proposed a model for helping universities cultivate a moral culture of academic integrity. This qualitative study examined how a national sample of 75 students perceived the moral culture within their university using the McCabe et al. model as a basis for analysis. The analysis revealed that interviewees consistently focus on the overarching negative messages and elements found in the culture while also downplaying the problem of academic dishonesty. Moreover, students did not identify elements of the culture that might transmit positive ideals. Finally, a love of learning was not students' motivation for academic honesty; instead, external goods played a motivating factor in an avoidance of cheating behavior, including not wasting money and not getting caught. The results of this study may be helpful for administrators as they consider how they communicate their academic integrity policies to their campuses, especially in terms of creating a positive campus ethos.
