The Relationship between Student Anti-Intellectualism, Academic Entitlement, Student Consumerism, and Classroom Incivility in a Sample of College Students
Laverghetta, Antonio
College Student Journal, v52 n2 p278-282 Sum 2018
The purpose of this study was to determine if a significant relationship exists between measures of anti-intellectualism, classroom incivility, academic entitlement, and consumerist attitudes towards the concept of college life. A sample of college students completed an online survey that comprised these issues. The prediction was supported as scores on a measure of student anti-intellectualism were positively correlated with measures of classroom incivility, academic entitlement, and consumerist attitudes towards college. These results are consistent with the notion that student anti-intellectualism is related to a myriad of attitudes and beliefs that are not conducive to academic learning nor are these factors consistent with the values of a traditional liberal arts college. The findings are also discussed in the context of the impact of consumerism in higher education.
