Journey around the World Curriculum: Bridging Global and Prosocial Education
Savina, Elena
Childhood Education, v96 n2 p42-49 2020
Journey Around the World is an innovative elementary school curriculum that bridges global and prosocial education. The goal of the Journey is to teach children to be open to cultural diversity, have knowledge and understanding of other cultures, and accept others' views in a non-defensive and curious manner. It further focuses on educating young people to have a moral compass, relate to others in a caring and kind manner, work collaboratively with others, and take responsible social action. The curriculum is designed as a series of stories about four fictitious friends traveling around the United States and the world. Children are engaged in listening to stories as they take imaginary trips around the world with the Journey characters. The journey begins in Kenya, and then the "travelers" go on to visit China, Brazil, France, Russia, Australia, Jordan, and India. Children learn about the culture of each country, practice cultural perspective taking, and act prosocially.
