Moving toward Social Justice through Crisis and Change
Stein, Sophia
Childhood Education, v97 n3 p38-43 2021
When the COVID-19 virus first made headlines, nobody could have imagined the devastating effect it would have on the world. With children home from school, tens of millions unemployed, and millions losing loved ones, lives around the world have been turned completely upside down. One of the things that has changed the most is the way children are receiving an education. In the absence of the regular school education to which teens are accustomed, a less typical but equally important type of learning has emerged. Despite the many challenges the author and her peers have had to face, they have all gained one experience out of the pandemic that certainly qualifies as a silver lining. Throughout quarantine, the author witnessed young adults in the United States becoming more knowledgeable, active, and conscious participants in the country's fight for social and political justice. The many crucial issues on the forefront of 2020's news prompted teens to engage in an important new form of education, one that allowed them to grow as compassionate, communicative, knowledgeable, and moral people.
