Integrating Sustainable Development Goals with Early Childhood Learning in Indonesia
Shore, Margaret
Childhood Education, v97 n1 p68-74 2021
Up to 250 children of different ages can be seen when entering Sekolahku-MySchool (SMS) in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, integrated and happily engaged, indoors or outdoors, in sustainable activities as part of their everyday learning. With ages ranging from 16 months to 13 years, the children engage in learning typical academic skills and techniques within an overall learning environment that embodies nine of 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that were adopted by a majority of countries in 2015. The goals integrated into SMS's Inquiry and Activity-based curriculum are: "SDG1 No Poverty," "SDG2 Zero Hunger," "SDG3 Good Health and Well-being," "SDG4 Quality Education," "SDG5 Gender Equality," "SDG10 Reduced Inequalities," "SDG12 Responsible Consumption," "SDG15 Life on Land," and "SDG17 Partnership for the Goals." This article presents an abbreviated story of how this innovative development came about in response to global imperatives over the last 15 years.
