Policymakers and educators emphasize science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) instruction as key to individuals' and nations' future economic prosperity. It can be considered to be of particular value to students in developing countries and for disadvantaged students in developed countries. As families play a critical role in a child's education, their attitudes and understandings will directly influence the success of efforts to increase participation in STEM learning. This article explores how teachers can work with families to support their children's participation in STEM activities, and thus ultimately broaden the diversity within STEM education and careers.
