Young children today are exposed to technology at a much younger age than they were five to 10 years ago, and technology is now an important component of literacy. To be able to function in the world today, children need to learn how to read beyond a paperbound book. In this article, the author highlights Web sites that provide unique opportunities for children by promoting active literacy learning through technology use, and discusses the benefits of using the Internet to teach reading and writing. The Web sites are categorized as sites useful for phonics and phonemic awareness, comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, or writing. The author also includes excellent Web sites that encourage the development of written communication.
