The Analytics Revolution in Higher Education
Gagliardi, Jonathan; Parnell, Amelia; Carpenter-Hubin, Julie
Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, v50 n2 p22-29 2018
Over the last two years, more data was created than in the entire previous history of humankind (IBM, 2016; Marr, 2016). Roughly 1.7 megabytes of new information will be created every second for every person on earth by the turn of the decade (Evans, 2011; Gantz & Reinsel, 2012; Marr, 2016). Data are created continuously and at a rate that is constantly accelerating (Desouza, 2014). By 2025, it is expected that the digital universe will encompass more than 50 billion devices and more than 180 billion zettabytes (Marr, 2016; IDC, 2014). Transmitting all of that data through a broadband internet connection would take more than 450 million years (Economist, 2017). The article examines how the analytics revolution has led to a growing demand for colleges and universities to use data to make better decisions. It also explores how a college or university's Institutional Research office can play a lead role in building networks of data analysts throughout the institution and in facilitating organizational transformation through the use of data analytics. [This article is adapted from the book, "The Analytics Revolution in Higher Education: Big Data, Organizational Learning, and Student Success," forthcoming from Stylus in 2018.]
