This article describes and reviews The School Motivation and Learning Strategies Inventory (SMALSI™; Stroud & Reynolds, 2006), published by Western Psychological Services, a self-report inventory designed to assess academic motivation, as well as learning and study strategies. The test identifies 10 primary constructs, referred to broadly as "Strengths" and "Liabilities," that are related to specific strategies used by students for learning. This test can be used to identify students with ineffective learning strategies, low academic motivation, attention and concentration problems, test-taking difficulties, and test anxiety. The SMALSI consists of three forms: Child, Teen, and the newest edition, the College Form. The test is appropriate for both special and general education students with a wide variety of learning styles. SMALSI--College Form kits are available in both online (US$75.00) and paper (US$82.00) formats. The SMALSI possesses many qualities that make it an ideal tool for assessing academic motivation and learning strategies. First, the authors report that the learning dimensions measured using the SMALSI scales can be improved directly by implementing specific strategies, unlike other processing dimensions that cannot be improved using evidence-informed interventions. Therefore, it can be used for pre-referral screening and intervention, allowing administrators to address weak learning strategies proactively, rather than intervening after multiple counts of failure. The SMALSI Technical Manual provides a clear and detailed description of the administration, scoring, and interpretation. Finally, the SMALSI was standardized with a nationally representative sample of college-age students that comprises both undergraduate and graduate level students. Importantly, this normative sample represents a current sample. Although there are other commonly used assessments available, most notably the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI; Weinstein, 1987), their normative data have not been updated since its publication. Therefore, the SMALSI presents more current and relevant norms appropriate for evaluating today's post-secondary student population.
